This revised edition of a book first published in 1997 rethinks design, moving beyond its narrow understanding as a material or economic strategy to present it as a “cultural phenomenon” that shapes ways of living. This critical biography examines Yi Sang, the most controversial figure in Korean literary history. Long shrouded in myth, his notoriously difficult works have invited arbitrary interpretations, while his life has often been reduced to that of a “taxidermied” intellectual, detached from the colonial realities of his time. Challenging these distortions, the book reconstructs Yi Sang’s life and oeuvre in full historical context, offering a definitive and fresh interpretation of both the writer and his work.
