2026년 2월 28자로 34년간 교수직을 마치고 정년 퇴임을 합니다. 제가 보람된 정년을 맞이하게 된 것은 인생의 고비마다 격려와 응원으로 일으켜주신 수많은 분들 덕분이며, 다시 한번 감사의 인사를 드립니다. 

 

특히 1998년 8월 부당한 재임용탈락으로 위기에 처했을 때, 저를 믿고 나서 주신 교수·학생 공동대책위원회를 비롯해 지지 서명을 해주신 학내외 교수님들과 학생들 그리고 민교협, 전국교수노조, 민족문제연구소, 민주사회를 위한 변호사모임(민변) 등 학계, 시민사회 여러분들께 감사를 드립니다.

 

또한 저의 사건을 ‘학문의 자유와 교원신분보장을 위한 공익사건’으로 간주해 최종 승소하기까지 애써주신 법무법인 태평양과 안영수 변호사님, 그리고 현명한 판결을 내려주신 행정법원 1심과 대법원, 파기환송심 고등법원 재판부에 감사드립니다.

 

이같이 수많은 분들의 도움과 격려가 있었기에 저는 6년 반의 긴 터널을 뚫고 2005년 3월 마침내 원직 복직할 수 있었습니다. 복직 후 보답하고자 교수 본연의 책무인 연구와 교육에 매진했고, 2012년부터 대학원 과정에 <디자인역사문화> 전공을 개설해 후진 양성에 정진해왔습니다. 저를 믿고 따라준 성실한 학생들이 있었기에 행복한 교육자의 삶과 의미있는 연구를 지속할 수 있었습니다.

 

이제 정년 퇴임을 맞아 그동안 연구하고 활동한 기록들을 이 아카이브에 담아 감사의 마음으로 세상에 보냅니다.

As of February 28, 2026, I will be retiring from my position after 34 years of professorship. That I am able to reach this meaningful milestone is a testament to the countless individuals who lifted me up with encouragement and support during the most challenging turning points of my life. To all of you, I express my deepest gratitude.

​

I would especially like to thank those who stood by me during the crisis of August 1998, following my unjust dismissal from reappointment. My sincere thanks go to the Joint Faculty-Student Committee for their proactive leadership, as well as the professors and students within and outside the university who signed petitions in my support. I am also profoundly grateful to the academic and civil society organizations that championed my cause, including the Korean Association of University Professors for Democracy (MAAL), the Korea Union of Academic Workers (KUAW), The Center for Historical Truth and Justice, and the Minbyun(Lawyers for a Democratic Society).

Furthermore, I extend my appreciation to the Bae, Kim & Lee (BKL) law firm and Attorney Ahn Young-soo, who treated my case as a public interest matter for the protection of academic freedom and faculty tenure, laboring tirelessly until our final victory. I also respect the wise rulings delivered by the Administrative Court (First Instance), the Supreme Court, and the High Court (Remand).

It was only through the collective help and encouragement of so many that I was able to emerge from that six-and-a-half-year tunnel and finally be reinstated to my original position in March 2005. Following my return, I devoted myself to the core duties of research and education to honor that support. Since 2012, I have focused on nurturing the next generation by establishing the <Design History and Culture> graduate program. It is because of my diligent students, who followed me with trust, that I have been able to lead a fulfilling life as an educator and sustain meaningful research.

As I retire, I have gathered the records of my lifelong research and activities within this archive. I release them into the world now with a heart full of gratitude.
